Immunohistochemical Studies on the Keratin in the Mammary Diseases

Abstract
i o observe the epithelial staining reaction and the distribution of cytokeratin in carcinoma and a variety of benign breast diseases, immunohistochemical studies were carried out with paraffin embedded sections. The studies consisted of 16 cases of infiltrating duct carcinoma, 1 case of medullary carcinoma, 16 cases of fibroadenoma and 28 cases of fibrocystic diseases. Method of immunohistochemical staining was P_-IP (peroxidase-antiperoxidase) method.
The results were as follows:

1. The weakly positive reaction with keratin were observed in 13 cases out of 16 cases of infiltrating duct carcinoma and the positivities in the epithelium of the hyperplastic ducts adjacent to carcinoma were stronger than that of carcinomas_

2. Tile weakly to moderately positive reactions with keratin were observed in 13 cases out of 16 cases of fibroadenoma and the positivities in the epithelium of the pericanalicular area were stronger than that of the intracanalicular area.
3. The weakly to moderately positive reactions with keratin were observed in all 28 cases of fibrocystic diseases. Adenosis and epithelial hyperplasia revealed stronger positi-,- e staining than those of fibrosis and cystic disease.
4. Therefore, reactivities of epithelial cytokeratin were stronger in the epithelium of benign condition than carcinomas and in more differentiated carcinoma than less differentiated one.
